Mackintosh titled the drawings “An Artists Cottage and Studio” probably intending the building to be for himself and his wife Margaret MacDonald.

The Artists Cottage has been built with enormous attention to detail, both inside and outside, priority being given to the interpretation of Mackintosh’s intentions, whilst taking full advantage of modern building methods and materials.

Externally, the strong batter of the main walls rises to softly rounded parapets interrupted by contrasting verticals and deeply pierced window openings, all of which presents a design of much sculptural force.

Most of the windows on the ground floor have been patterned with leaded glass from designs taken from a variety of Mackintosh sources to create a stunning effect. The landing window on the east elevation and the drawing room window on the south are particularly outstanding features.
